Delaware Park has an eight-race card on Saturday, October 13. Post time for the card is 1:15 p.m. Some horses to watch:

Race 3 – Maiden claiming

  • Maidens three and up will go six furlongs on the main track at the $7,500 claiming level.
  • #3 Space Key (10-1) makes a rather abrupt drop to the bottom when landing in this spot. Yes, he’s a five-year-old maiden, so it’s pretty much past time to fish or cut bait. But in his last four starts prior to this one, he faced NY-bred maiden special weight rivals on the turf, running well enough in each of those, including a third-place finish when beaten less than a length. That was in 2017, though, and here he makes his first start of the year while dropping to the bottom. He’ll also be doing it for a new barn, that of Ramon Aguayo. He’s showing just two three-furlong works in preparation and will have eight-percent rider Jorge Gonzalez up. We won’t be betting on him, but we are curious to see how he runs.
  • Speaking of horses seemingly meant for better things, #6 California King (7-2) has to be a pretty big “ouch!” for his connections. The sophomore Animal Kingdom gelding was a $180,000 auction purchase as a two-year-old last July, meaning that in the space of about 15 months, he’s seen his value drop by about 96 percent. In his five prior starts, all in California, he finished last three times, never finished better than seventh, and never was closer than 11 lengths behind the winner. He shifts into the powerful Claudio Gonzalez barn here and drops all the way to the bottom. Ashley Castrenze will ride.
  • Selections: 7-8-6-2
