There are 575 numbered hips (prior to outs) scheduled for this year’s Fasig-Tipton two-year-olds in training sale, which takes place Monday and Tuesday in Timonium.

Which means, inevitably, that there will be something there for pretty much every taste and pocketbook — even if your taste runs specifically to gray horses (there are 57 of those), geldings (four), or Virginia-breds (two).

Some facts and figs:

HIPS BY STATE

The leading state — no surprise here — is Kentucky. Over 320 of the hips on offer were bred there, with New York (130) the only other state in triple digits.

Maryland offers the fourth-most hips, with 26 Maryland-breds on offer. Pennsylvania isn’t far behind, with 19. Among the other mid-Atlantic states:

  • West Virginia — 6
  • New Jersey — 3
  • Virginia — 2

Heck, there’s even an Iowa-bred here.

HIPS BY COLOR

If you’re in the market for a brown horse, you’re in luck! Brown horses lead the pack, with 227 here, followed by dark bays with 164 and chestnuts, with 124.

Oh, and of course, those gray horses that the folks around the paddock love so; there are 57 of them.

HIPS BY SIRE

Two-year-old sales typically turn on sire power, and there figures to be plenty of that at the Big T Monday and Tuesday.

Perhaps the country’s hottest sire, Uncle Mo, will be amply represented with 17 hips on offer, more than any other sire. Shanghai Bobby and Into Mischief aren’t far behind; there are 16 by each of those sires here, as well.

Eleven hips by newly minted Derby sire Bodemeister are on the docket, too, and even a pair from now-Preakness sire Maclean’s Music.

In all, there are hips by 176 different sires, including one — one of the last — from deceased star Maryland sire Not for Love.

HIPS BY DAMSIRE

Speaking of Not for Love, five of the offered hips are out of mares that he sired. That places him mid-pack, though well behind the sale’s leader, Unbridled’s Song, who is the damsire for 12 hips here.

Forestry and Elusive Quality are next in line, with nine each, while top sire Tapit, Fusaichi Pegasus, and Giant’s Causeway are the damsires of eight hips each.

Overall, there are 284 different damsires in the sale.

First hip goes through the ring at 11:00 a.m. Monday.
