From the Spa: July 27 Midlantic-breds in Saratoga stakes

“From the Spa,” written by our on-site correspondent Joe Aiello, III, returns to keep you up-to-date on horses bred in the mid-Atlantic racing in Saratoga stakes.

The Wednesday, July 27 feature race is the six furlong $200,000 Grade 2 Honorable Miss Handicap. This race was named after a very respected mare of the early 1970s. Honorable Miss ran mostly sprint distances and was competitive against both male and females. She was so well thought of that the New York Racing Association named this race after her. 2015fromthespalogo

Last year’s running of the Honorable Miss had an unusual outcome, as La Verdad romped to a four-length victory but was subsequently disqualified when found to have Clenbuterol in her system.  That put Street Story up to first.

Our Mid-Atlantic-bred on tomorrow’s dance card is none other than Disco Chick. This five-year-old, Pennsylvania-bred mare is by Jump Start – Disco Flirt, by Disco Rico. She will be ridden by jockey Trevor McCarthy and is trained by Mario Serey Jr. This multiple stakes race winner was bred and is owned by Yaroslaw Jerry Kolybabiuic. Coming off a second-place finish in the Dashing Beauty Stakes at Delaware Park, Disco Chick has morning line odds of 6/1.

The decade of the 1970s brought us both the mare Honorable Miss, and the beginning of the fad known as disco. Today we’ll see if Disco Chick is a throwback in time.
